About

Who we are

The Athlone Institute Trust is a Paarl institution founded in 1926 to open the doors of higher education to a community that had been shut out of them.

The Institute grew out of a decision by church communities in Paarl that their young people should have access to further study. What began as a shared local effort became a trust that has supported students, safeguarded records and carried the community’s educational ambitions across a century.

What the Trust does

  • Provides bursary support for students in tertiary study.
  • Holds and preserves the Institute’s historical records.
  • Supports education and community development initiatives in Paarl.
  • Works with churches, schools, universities and partners.

Governance

The Institute is governed by a board of trustees accountable to the Trust deed. Trustees oversee the bursary fund, the Institute’s assets and records, and the organisation’s conduct and reporting.

Ownership of the Institute’s assets

All records, photographs, publications, digital assets and the Institute’s web presence belong to the Athlone Institute Trust. Anyone appointed to administer them does so on the Trust’s behalf.
